Working together against bullying

The Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence (QSAAV) today released its report, Keeping Queensland Schools Safe.

QCPCA is proud to be a member of this group which looks at ensuring the safety of students and staff for all schools and schooling sectors.

On 15 July 2011, the Minister for Education and Industrial Relations, the Honourable Cameron Dick MP announced that he had reconvened the Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence and that the Alliance would be supported by two experts, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg and Professor Paul Mazerolle who have been commissioned to examine the use of mobile phones and other mobile communication devices in schools and the use of weapons in schools. The reconvened Queensland Schools Alliance Against Violence has reviewed the progress made towards implementing the recommendations from the 2010 report and consider the findings from Dr Carr-Gregg and Professor Mazerolle and provide advice to the Minister on the best way forward.

The Keeping Queensland Schools Safe report is now available on the Department of Education and Training website.

National day of action against bullying 2012

E-mail Print PDF

Focus on parent involvement on national day of action against bullying

The 2012 National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence is on Friday 16 March. The focus for the day will be on assisting parents and families to take a stand with their child's school against bullying and violence.

Schools are being encouraged to work with their community to develop local anti-bullying activities to help raise awareness of the real issues of bullying and violence.

National day of action activities for parents could include wearing orange and participating in their school's national day of action activities.

Parents are also encouraged to visit the updated Bullying. No way! website. To be launched on 16 March, the website will include parent, teacher and student portals with resources for teachers and information for parents about how they can work with the school if their child is being bullied.

On their own portal at www.takeastandtogether.gov.au, students will have the chance to try out the avatar builder or the 'choose your own adventure' activity to learn how to deal with bullying.

For further support, students with iPhones can download a free iPhone app so they can quickly look up anti-bullying strategies no matter where they are.

Gonski review findings released

E-mail Print PDF

QCPCA broadly supports the findings of the Gonski review of school funding released today.

The full report can be found at http://www.schoolfunding.gov.au/

To ensure our schools are amongst the best, the report recommends introducing a Schooling Resource Standard, which would have two elements:

  • a set investment per student;
  • plus additional top-up funding to target disadvantage.

Have your say - Queensland Education Trust

E-mail Print PDF

Dear QCPCA Member

Queensland's resources boom provides a unique opportunity for all Queenslanders to benefit for years to come, particularly our children and young people.

The State Government has launched a proposal paper, From Mines to Minds: A Queensland Education Trust, to establish a multi-billion dollar Queensland Education Trust using 50 per cent of royalties from Liquefied Natural Gas projects to provide additional education and training opportunities for the next generation.

Options for the Queensland Education Trust include:

  • Establishing Individual Trust Accounts for Education - every child born on or after 1 July 2012 would have a nest egg valued between $7800 and $9500 when they turn 18; or
  • Establishing a Dedicated Education Fund - an investment fund where the proceeds would be reinvested by government in education and training initiatives beyond the basics throughout the schooling years and potentially beyond.

You are invited to have your say on the proposed Queensland Education Trust and how it should operate at a community forum, to be held at the following locations:

Cairns State High School -Wednesday February 1 2012 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm (The forum will be hosted by the Honourable Curtis Pitt, Minister for Disability Services, Mental Health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Member for Mulgrave. A light supper will be served.)

Townsville State High School, 36 Boundary Street, Townsville- Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. (The forum will be hosted by the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe, Minister for Employment, Skills and Mining. A light supper will be served.)

Brisbane South community forum, to be held at Mount Gravatt State High School- Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. (I will have pleasure in hosting the forum. A light supper will be served.)

Gold Coast community forum, to be held at Varsity College, 198 Varsity Road, Varsity Lakes- Wednesday, February 8, 2012 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. (The forum will be hosted by the Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Minister for Employment, Skills and Mining. A light supper will be served.)

Brisbane North community forum, to be held at Rainworth State School, 185 Boundary Road, Rainworth-Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. (The forum will be hosted by the Honourable Andrew Fraser MP, Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister for State Development and Trade. A light supper will be served.)

Rockhampton community forum, to be held at Rockhampton State High School, Campbell Street, Rockhampton, on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. I will have pleasure in hosting the forum. A light supper will be served.

To learn more and register your interest in attending the community forum visit the Queensland Government website at www.educationtrust.qld.gov.au.
